Establishing a grant-writing mentoring partnership

When you have gathered information about the range of potential funders, then, if you are new to grant applications, teaming up with a mentor can make a positive difference to your chances of success. This mentoring partnership can be very rewarding. In Table 8.1, we consider different sources of grant-writing mentors and the advantages to both parties of the mentoring partnership.

Table 8.1

If you are new to grant writing, once you have identified a potential mentor, you can approach them with your preliminary ideas and ask if they would be willing to work with you. If the individual is someone you already know well and have worked with before, this should be unproblematic. However, we would advise a note of caution when discussing your research ideas with a stranger. While, of course, most academics are entirely honourable and, as described above, forming a new collaborative relationship through this type of mentoring can be highly rewarding for both parties, it is not unknown for the occasional unscrupulous person to steal another’s ideas.
